Aura (45 years old)

The week following Dr. King’s assassination was bedlam not only for us but also for people across the nation, as the riots showed no sign of abating. Some of my students had televisions and watched the story on the news. Others heard about it in the bars on Saturday night and in church on Sunday. It was the major topic of conversation in all my classes.

“Miz Kruger,” said one student, “it’s unfair. We should be out there protesting too, but they ain’t no white people in town for us to protest against.”

“’Ceptin’ the Krugers,” laughed another.

“Y’all know what I mean. I need to do something, anything.”

“They doin’ something in Shelby,” offered another.

“Yeah. I heard the students wanted to do an assembly like we did last week, but the principal won’t let them. He say it too dangerous. He be scared the KKK will come break it up.”

“That’s right. So ’bout fifty of them picked up the school bus and turned it right around. Then they moved it onto the grass.”

“I dunno ’bout that, but my friend told me that since they can’t do an assembly program, they gonna march on city hall.”

“When they doin’ that?”

“Day after tomorrow.”

“Maybe we could all march too.”
